The Food Safety Panel Forum and Southern Petrochemical Pole (ARD) of Arequipa, Peru, held a forum to promote industrialization from natural gas and petrochemicals. The event was led by the governor of the region, Congressmen of the Republic, regional councilors, provincial mayors, microentrepreneurs and farmers’ unions. They signed a declaration asking the President ofthe Republic to prioritize the economic development of the south by promoting a solid and robust industrialization based on natural gas. The forum also discussed the need for the location of the southern petrochemical complex, the Lomas de Ilo, Moquegua and Lomas De Tarpuy. Engineering engineer Jaime Quipusco Escobedo said it important that the authorities and population “come together” to support and ensure that petro chemicals are located in the south of the country.

In the Food Safety Panel Forum and Southern Petrochemical Pole, organized by the Regional Development Agency (ARD) of the Regional Government of Arequipa, renowned specialists and political authorities and civil society who participated in the event, confirmed that the south of the country, and especially Arequipa, constitutes the best technical and economic alternative for the installation of the petrochemical hub.
The authorities led by the governor of Arequipa, Dr. Rohel Sánchez Sánchez; Congressmen of the Republic, regional councilors, provincial mayors of Islay and districts, microentrepreneurs and farmers’ unions, signed, in the activity, a declaration in which they ask the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, to prioritize the economic development of the south by promoting a solid and robust industrialization based on natural gas and petrochemicals. They committed to managing at all levels of government the prompt realization of this desire.
They referred to Law 29690 of May 2011, Law for the Promotion of Ethane Petrochemicals, which establishes that this petrochemicals can only be installed in a specific geographical area in the south of Peru. DS 066-2008-EM that provides 1 TFC of Natural Gas from Lot 88 is destined to the south for this petrochemical industry and there are additional and sufficient proven reserves of natural gas for the petrochemical industry.
Likewise, they are approved with Supreme Resolutions of the MINEM as determined geographic zones for the location of the southern petrochemical complex, the Lomas de Ilo (RM 443-2009-MEM
-DM) Moquegua and Lomas de Tarpuy (250-2012-MEM-DM) in Matarani Arequipa.
In her last presidential message on July 28, the President of the Republic announced her decision to promote the construction of the urea petrochemical plant (used to fertilize crops) in the south of the country, a decision that business groups intend to reverse. that promote its location in Ica or Lima, and do not take into account the territorial economic development of the Macro Sur.
During his speech, the governor of Arequipa considered that the word of the President of the Republic should be “honored” so that petrochemicals operate in the south of the country. “And it would be better if it were installed in the Arequipa region,” he added.
Engineer Jaime Quipusco Escobedo, one of the speakers at the forum, considered it important that the authorities and population “come together” to support and ensure that petrochemicals are located in the south of the country, since this plant “is the main link to guarantee the country’s food security.”
