Protests threaten to dent the outlook for Peruvian copper
Government tries to unblock investment but projects trigger a backlash in rural areas Anti-mining activist Miguel Meza sparked widespread attention when he called out Peru’s president during a street protest during the country’�s principal mining conclave in Arequipa. The $1.4bn Tía María copper mine, owned by Southern Copper, was initially halted over a decade ago due to concerns that it would deplete water supplies. The company redesigned the project to include a desalination plant and a dam, but deadly protests have been ongoing for several years. Mining is the backbone of Peru's economy, accounting for 60% of exports and about 10% of gross domestic product. The government of Boluarte has pledged to increase mining investment, reduce red tape, and get 46 projects under way with a potential investment of $53bn. However, despite Peru's mineral wealth, it could lose investments to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
