Peru’s megaport aims to reshape region’s maritime traffic

Project offers a new model for infrastructure but raises concerns over Chinese influence The construction of the port in Chancay, Peru, is set to transform the region’s maritime traffic. The port, located 80km north of Lima, is expected to be one of the largest deepwater ports in Latin America and could upend maritime traffic along the Pacific coast of South America. Construction and operation will be conducted by private companies, with a total of $3.6bn invested in the initial phase of construction costing $1.3bn. In its initial phase, the port is estimated to handle 1mn containers and 6mn tonnes of loose cargo a year. The project is also set to benefit Brazil, which is expected as a beneficiary due to the port's proximity to Asian markets. However, some observers, including US officials, have expressed concern that it could increase Chinese influence on Peru's infrastructure.
