Peruvian tourism steps up from trekking to luxury experiences
The sector is setting out to attract more lucrative upmarket visitors after a pandemic low Peruvian tourism has seen a surge in recent years, with tourists increasingly able to enjoy luxury experiences in the country's capital, Cusco. The Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu was once a popular destination for backpacker mass tourism, but is now being pursued by luxury tourists who do less environmental and archaeological damage while spending more. The tourism sector is becoming more accessible due to the ongoing Covid pandemic and protests against President Dina Boluarte, which have disrupted some airports and roads in the south. Despite these challenges, tourism is recovering and is pushing through, with Peru expected to welcome 3.1 million tourists next year.
